The yoga of daily life

Born
Srpci, Ottoman Empire (now North Macedonia), 31 January 1900
Died
Fréjus, France, 25 December 1986

A Bulgarian-French master who taught that the sun, food, breath, and the hara centre are instruments of inner alchemy. Spiritual life is not escape from matter but the illumination of eating, walking, and greeting the day.

Life

He was born Mikhail Dimitrov Ivanov on 31 January 1900 in Srpci, then in the Ottoman Empire. As a young man in Bulgaria he became a disciple of the teacher Peter Deunov (Beinsa Douno), whose Brotherhood of Light joined Christian mysticism, music, paneurhythmy, and a solar spirituality. The training was long: inner work, music, and a life among brothers, not a weekend conversion.

In 1937 Deunov sent him to France. He arrived as Mikhaël, a relatively unknown Bulgarian, and remained in the West for the rest of his life. During and after the war he taught in Paris and later at Sèvres, then at the Bonfin near Fréjus. In 1959, after a year in India, he took the name Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov. Around him formed the Fraternité Blanche Universelle — a school of daily spiritual practice rather than a personality cult.

His yoga was solar and ordinary. He taught people to greet the sunrise, to eat in silence and gratitude, to breathe into the hara, and to treat the subtle bodies as a living instrument. Food, light, water, and relationship were not preliminaries to the path: they were the path. He spoke for decades, often without notes, and the talks were gathered into a large body of books published by Éditions Prosveta.

He died at Fréjus on Christmas Day 1986. What remains is a method that does not require a cave: the first light of morning, the first mouthful, the breath in the belly, and a brotherhood that tries to live what it hears.

Every ordinary function — eating, breathing, seeing the sun — can become a sacrament if attention and gratitude enter it.

How to work

Meet the first light of day, even at a window. Eat the first mouthfuls in silence. Breathe into the lower belly. Treat the body as a temple already in use.
